In the distant future, Duke Leto Atreides is assigned by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV to govern Arrakis, a desert planet crucial for its exclusive resource, "spice," which is essential for space travel and grants heightened abilities. Fearing Leto's growing influence, Shaddam secretly conspires with House Harkonnen and their Sardaukar troops to reclaim Arrakis and destroy House Atreides.
Leto’s concubine, Lady Jessica, a member of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, defies their plan by bearing a son, Paul, instead of a daughter. The Bene Gesserit had intended for the daughter’s son to become a messianic figure, the Kwisatz Haderach. Paul, trained in both Bene Gesserit disciplines and combat, begins to have prophetic visions triggered by the spice.
Upon arriving at Arrakis, Leto seeks to ally with the Fremen, the planet’s native people. An assassination attempt on Paul fails, and Leto negotiates with Fremen leader Stilgar and Dr. Liet Kynes, an Imperial planetologist. The Atreides face betrayal from within; Doctor Yueh disables the shields protecting Arrakeen, enabling the Harkonnens and Sardaukar to attack. Yueh, seeking revenge, provides Leto with a poison capsule to kill the Baron. Though Leto dies in the attempt, the Baron survives, and Paul and Jessica are left to die in the desert.
Surviving the desert thanks to Yueh’s hidden supplies, Paul and Jessica are rescued by Fremen, who recognize Paul from their prophecies. Paul undergoes a ritual duel with a Fremen warrior, Jamis, and emerges victorious. He and Jessica join the Fremen, with Paul determined to fulfill his father’s legacy and bring peace to Arrakis while navigating the turbulent future foretold by his visions.
