In Baahubali: The Beginning, a woman sacrifices her life to save an infant, Mahendra Baahubali, from a raging river. The child is adopted by a village tribe and grows up as Siva, a man with extraordinary strength.
Driven by a mysterious mask he discovers, Siva climbs a treacherous mountain and meets Avantika, a warrior from a resistance group fighting the cruel King Bhallaladeva of Mahishmati. Siva joins the mission to rescue Princess Devasena, held captive by the king. After rescuing Devasena, Siva is confronted by Bhallaladeva's forces, including his son Bhadra, whom he defeats.
The royal guard, Kattappa, shockingly surrenders to Siva, revealing his true identity as Mahendra Baahubali, the heir to the Mahishmati throne. Kattappa recounts the story of Siva's father, Amarendra Baahubali, a noble warrior raised alongside Bhallaladeva by Queen Sivagami. Amarendra was chosen as the rightful heir after defeating the savage Kalakeya tribe with his bravery and compassion.
